Confirmation for School Age Students

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit
comes upon you,
and you will be my witness…”
Acts 1:8

“Confirmation enriches the baptized with the strength of the Holy Spirit so that they can better witness to Christ in word and deed.  Anointed by the Holy Spirit at Confirmation, Christians strengthen their bond with the church and become better equipped to carry out the Church’s mission of love and service.”  (CCC 1285)

The Sacrament of Confirmation is a sacrament of initiation, and the completion of the sacrament of Baptism.  Confirmation for Holy Trinity parishioners is usually celebrated in the eighth grade for the students who have been enrolled and actively participating in our religious education program continuously from K-8 grades. In addition, parent(s) or legal guardian(s), candidates, and their sponsors are to attend and participate in the Sacramental preparation sessions, parish and community service projects, Confirmation retreat and rehearsal.  Holy Trinity Parish celebrates Confirmation at Saint Columba Cathedral usually in late winter or early spring and also follows the guidelines set forth by the National Catechetical Directory and the Diocese of Youngstown’s Directory of Catechesis which states:

  • “As primary educators of their children, parents, along with sponsors, are to be intimately involved in catechesis for Confirmation.  This will help them renew and strengthen their own faith, besides enabling them to set a better example for their children or godchildren” (National Catechetical Directory #119).  (C-4 of the DOY/D.O.C.)
  • Catechetical sessions for candidates, sponsors and parents/guardians will be held as part of the formation for the sacrament of Confirmation.  (C-4 D.O.C.)
  • Grade 8 will be the normal age of reception.  Students invited will be in grade 8 at the time of celebration is to take place.  In parishes at which the celebration is every other year, some students will be in the ninth grade.  Other high school students who have not yet been confirmed should also be invited to participate.  (C-4 D.O.C.)
  • An annual Confirmation retreat and rehearsal for candidates and sponsors will also be scheduled. (C-4 D.O.C.)
  • The pastor will have the final responsibility in determining within diocesan guidelines, the readiness of the candidate to celebrate the sacrament.  (C-4 D.O.C.)
